An island is a closed form. A closed form geographically circumscribed by a boundary that prevents or severely inhibits any kind of exchange.
The cyclical and repetitive nature of life in a limited space causes time to become, if not cancelled out entirely, at least relative. The island becomes a fortress, a mere rock, a stable, contained, defined and inescapable system.
With these key characteristics of an island in mind, Alive In This Stone is a reflection on the particular poetics of afro-insularity.
